Escape from the Heat
Why Green Season on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, Is the Perfect Summer Retreat:
As I write this, I have just experienced the hottest week ever recorded in Paris’s history. Temperatures climbed above 42°C (108°F), and like thousands of others, I found myself planning each day around the heat—seeking shade, carrying water everywhere, searching for air-conditioned spaces, and learning firsthand how physically and mentally exhausting prolonged extreme temperatures can be.
For travelers, this raises an important question: Where can we still find a place where nature sets the pace, mornings begin with birdsong, and there is room to breathe, reflect, and simply slow down?
For us, the answer has always been Lake Atitlán, Guatemala.

Welcome to Guatemala’s Beautiful Green Season!
From May through late October, Guatemala enters what locals affectionately call the Green Season.
While some travelers hear the words “rainy season” and imagine endless gray skies, the reality is something entirely different.
Most mornings begin with brilliant sunshine, blue skies, the sounds of nature awakening and balmy temperatures in our crisp, refreshing highland paradise. Lake Atitlán is often calm and reflective, inviting guests to kayak, paddleboard, swim, practice yoga, meditate, or simply enjoy breakfast overlooking one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

As the day unfolds, clouds gradually gather over the surrounding volcanoes. Late afternoon or evening often brings refreshing showers—sometimes a gentle mist, sometimes a dramatic tropical rainstorm that nourishes the forests before clearing once again.
Almost overnight, the landscape transforms into a living tapestry of emerald forests, vibrant gardens, and fresh mountain air.
The hillsides glow in every imaginable shade of emerald green. Tropical flowers bloom, herbs flourish in our gardens, and waterways begin flowing once again through the mountainsides.
For many of us who live here, this is actually our favorite season.

Nature’s Air Conditioning
Rather than struggling through relentless heat, crowded cities, and the overwhelming crowds of peak-season tourism, guests at Villa Sumaya awaken to cool mountain mornings, refreshing breezes drifting across Lake Atitlán, and a spaciousness that invites you to breathe deeply.
The mornings are filled with sunshine, birdsong, and tranquil lake waters. As afternoon clouds gather over the three majestic volcanoes that surround the lake, gentle showers begin to nourish the land. The rains transform the landscape as the earth bursts into colorful blooms and vibrant new growth. By evening, the air feels fresh, clean, and alive.
Villa Sumaya rests on the ancient caldera of Lake Atitlán’s imploded volcano, directly across the lake from three of Guatemala’s most breathtaking volcanic peaks. The dramatic scenery inspires awe, while the quiet rhythm of nature creates an atmosphere of profound peace.

I notice a similar pattern throughout much of Asia, where the rainy season has traditionally been the time for monks and practitioners settle into extended meditation retreats. There is a natural wisdom in this rhythm. The rains encourage us to slow down, turn inward, reflect, study, create, and deepen our practice.
Over the past twenty-five years, we have found that Guatemala’s Green Season offers that same invitation.
Here there is room to move slowly, room to think clearly, room to create, and room to reconnect with yourself. Without the intensity of crowded tourist destinations or oppressive summer heat, many guests discover that they sleep more deeply, feel more present, and remember what it feels like to simply be.
Lessons from the Extreme Heat:
After experiencing a week of record-breaking temperatures in Paris, I discovered a few simple strategies that made an enormous difference.
If you find yourself traveling during a heat wave:
Carry a rechargeable handheld fan.
Freeze water bottles overnight. They keep drinking water cold for hours and can also be placed in front of a fan to create a simple cooling effect.
Wear a light-colored hat or place a cool, damp scarf over your head and the back of your neck.
Plan sightseeing for early morning or evening whenever possible.
Take long midday breaks indoors during the hottest hours.
Drink water frequently, even before you feel thirsty.
Choose lighter meals and allow yourself time to rest.
These small adjustments can make travel far more comfortable during periods of extreme heat.
They also reminded me how precious it is to spend time in places where nature naturally supports well-being rather than working against it.

Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t endless sunshine.

Garden hammocks offer a cool, peaceful summer escape.
After twenty-five years living on the shores of Lake Atitlán, we can honestly say that the Green Season has become our favorite time of year.
For us, true luxury isn’t found in rushing from one attraction to the next. It is found in having the space to breathe deeply, sleep well, reconnect with nature, nourish your body, and remember what it feels like to simply be present.
That is the gift of Guatemala’s Green Season.
We invite you to experience Villa Sumaya and discover why so many returning guests consider this peaceful, vibrant season the most magical time of the year.
