Healing, Nature, and Community: 25 Years at Villa Sumaya, Lake Atitlán

From a lakeside bed and breakfast to a retreat centre

More than 25 years ago, Villa Sumaya began as a small lakeside bed and breakfast on the shores of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. From the beginning, our vision was simple: to create a sanctuary where people could reconnect with nature, discover inner stillness, and experience the beauty and wisdom of this extraordinary place.

The Tiger Temple: where it started

In its early years, a prized lakefront holding was dedicated to the creation of the 1,150 square-foot Tiger Temple, the retreat center’s first yoga and healing arts studio. That decision established the spiritual heart of Villa Sumaya and helped attract accomplished retreat leaders, healers, teachers, artists, and seekers from around the world.

Growing with the landscape

Over the decades, Villa Sumaya grew organically from seven guest rooms to 25, with four studios, seven healing rooms, one swimming pool, two hot tubs, our electric sauna, the sweat lodge, a boutique gift shop, Apothecary and numerous open air garden pavilions and lounges designed with a commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the lakeshore setting. Gardens flourished, sacred spaces emerged, artists further embellished the vision, with each addition thoughtfully integrated into the landscape. Our retreat center became known not only for its wellness programs and healing arts offerings, but also for the sense of peace, inspiration, and transformation guests often experience while surrounded by the majestic volcanoes and living Mayan culture of Lake Atitlán.

As Villa Sumaya evolved, so did its relationship with the local community. What began as simple acts of kindness gradually expanded into ongoing outreach projects supporting vulnerable elders, local schools, and families in need.

The Mayan Mothers and Fathers Project

Through the Mayan Mothers and Fathers Project, local elders receive weekly food assistance, personal hygiene supplies, household necessities and compassionate care. To date, the program has helped provide 26 custom-fit eyeglasses, medications, and 28 sight-restoring cataract, entropion, and related eye surgeries for local Mayan elders, allowing many to regain independence and quality of life.

Beyond the Project: playgrounds, mattresses, solar lanterns

Additional community initiatives have funded the first playground equipment serving two local schools, provided mattresses and essential household items, and most recently supplied solar lanterns to 44 at-risk and elderly Mayan community members.

Today, Villa Sumaya continues to serve as both a wellness retreat destination and a bridge between visitors and the local culture. Its mission remains rooted in the belief that personal healing, environmental stewardship, cultural respect, and community well-being are deeply interconnected.

More than a retreat center, Villa Sumaya is a living expression of what can emerge when people come together with a shared commitment to healing, beauty, service, and connection.

If you'd like to experience Villa Sumaya for yourself, our upcoming retreats and personal retreat programmes are open for booking.
